Russia is home to one of the world's largest coal mining industries, second only to the US in terms of coal reserves (Russia has reserves of 173 billion t compared to the US's 263 billion t). In Russia, there are 150 opencast mines, almost 100 underground mines and 190 coal mining companies employing 150 000 people.
