CAMBAM. With the workpiece designed in Alibre and output as a dxf file, it was time to move to CamBam to create the machining paths and the G-code to run the CNC mill. As I did for the geometry creation in Alibre, I'll provide a step-by-step description of what I did in CamBam. A side view of how the stock will be set up for machining in the mill is seen in Photo 34. The stock is rested on a surface that was defined as my XY plane at an altitude of 0. The vertical travel of the quill is along the Z-axis. Not shown is how the stock is secured. It must be locked in place such that all clamps or vise jaws are below the area to be machined. The cutter will come in from the top, so clamping the sides near the bottom is safe. Proper clamping is beyond the scope of this article, but it's an important consideration in CNC machining.
