This hobby has a long tradition of mentoring, and one does not have to look beyond the pages of the magazine to find evidence. Although we do pay for articles and the authors are often pleasantly surprised at the amount of the checks, you won't get rich off of writing; the driving factor behind almost all of the submittals is a desire to share with and to give back to the hobby. As Gary Lucas points out in his letter, the First Tech Challenge and First Robotics Competition programs offer a number of ways to get involved and share your machining knowledge. Options to help include the position of technical assistant, helping with programming, electrical work, mechanical work, and the proper use of tools and machinery. There is more to the First programs than just the building, though, and mentors are also needed to help with project management, scholarships, marketing, and finance. As long as you have an interest in helping kids, there's a place for you to give a hand.
