This paper compares the energy efficiency of burning gaseous fuel at a constant volume and of Chapman-Jouguet detonation in the case of an incomplete thermodynamic process that ends with the isentropic expansion of the combustion products to pressure in the surrounding atmosphere. Unlike the complete thermodynamic cycle, the process under consideration does not provide the stopping of combustion products as well as restoring of the initial values of pressure and gas density. It is shown that the absolute advantage of Chapman-Jouguet detonation is manifested only when the kinetic energy of the detonation products is used. Otherwise, combustion at a constant volume may be more effective than detonation.
