Spotting trends in safety data, such as a small rise in incidents with certain characteristics, is enormously valuable, because it can show where management attention can be best focussed to reduce accidents. These trends can be hard to spot by analysing the data in safety reporting forms, unless you were lucky enough to put exactly the right question on the form.
