Improved therapy planning for eye tumors: a comparison between MRI and conventional ultrasound

Introduction: Uveal melanoma (UM) is the most frequently occurring primary eye tumor [1]. Clinical treatment decision making and radiotherapy planning mostly rely on ultrasound (US) measurements, such as tumor prominence (depth) and largest basal diameter (LBD) [2]. A slight difference in these measurements can already result in a shift between an eye-preserving treatment, such as brachytherapy and proton therapy, and enucleation. However, since ocular US is a 2D imaging technique, it results in a simplified representation of the 3D tumor volume. Recent advances have enabled high resolution MRI in a clinical setting, providing a more accurate and three-dimensional representation of the tumor volume [3, 4]. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the tumor prominence, LBD and volume for UM patients as measured with MRI and US.
