How to transform an ex-council tip into an eco parkNorthxern Roots team aiming to create self-sustaining, revenue-generating attraction
Oldham Council's Northern Roots urban farm and eco park has been a project four years in the making. In January 2019, the council approved two years of funding for the development phase, led by project director Anna da Silva. Addressing the LandscapeInstitute's Future of Parks forum, da Silva, who recently led the development of RHS Bridgewater, illustrated how the Northern Roots team would move the park from the drawing board to the realisation of a self-sustaining, revenue-generating attraction."This project builds on a long tradition of inspired and impactful green space management by Oldham Council's parks and countryside team," says da Silva. "The site is almost entirely within the ownership of Oldham Council and large parts of it used to be the council tip, which is a big part of why it hasn't been used for a long time."
