This article covers the following congenital ocular disorders in cats: orbit and globe; corneal; eyelid; iris; lens; retinal; and strabismus. Congenital eye diseases are rare in cats, but different abnormalities often occur in combination.ORBIT AND GLOBE DISEASETrue anophthalmos is very rare. Microphthalmos is much more common and can vary in severity from a slightly smaller eye with normal visual function to a significantly smaller eye with multiple ocular defects and blindness. Microphthalmos can arise due toadministration of the fungistatic agent griseofulvin to pregnant queens, as the developing foetus is very sensitive to the teratogenic effects of this drug. Potential results are anophthalmos/microphthalmos, cyclopia and optic nerve aplasia. Hydrophthalmos is a congenitally large globe due to congenital glaucoma. This may be associated with pectinate ligament dysplasia, ectopia lentis, spherophakia and uveal cysts, Hydrophthalmos has been reported as an inherited autosomal recessive condition in the Siamese, occurring with gradually progressive globe enlargement, elongated ciliary processes and spherophakia.
