EDWIN HANISCH 18 July 1950 - 9 November 2018

On 9 November 2018 archaeologist, Edwin Oscar Max Hanisch passed away in Tzaneen. Best known for his research at the important Middle Iron Age site of Schroda, Edwin contributed tremendously to the discipline beyond his work at this site. Edwin was born on 18 July 1950 to parents with a passion for archaeology. His father, Herbert M.E. Hanisch, was a civil servant and had a keen interest in the prehistory of Pretoria. Both his parents worked as amateur archaeologists with Prof. J.F. (Hannes) Eloff from the University of Pretoria. It was through such collaborations with the University of Pretoria that, in 1973, Hannes Eloff honoured Herbert Hanisch's contribution to archaeology by naming a postgraduate award in his name (UP News 2009).
