Antibiotic Stewardship for Treatment of Acute Bronchitis in Retail Health

The objective of this evidence-based project was to determine if a best practice alert (BPA) will decrease the number of oral antibiotic prescriptions for adults with acute bronchitis. The BPA is an electronic prompt that describes the guidelines for the treatment of acute bronchitis. The study sample included prescribing clini-cians (N = 41) at 11 retail health clinics that are associated with 1 larger health care organization. A quan-titative quasi-experimental pre-/post-study design was used. The chi-square test was used to compare antibiotic prescribing rates. Antibiotic prescribing rates decreased by 40%. The use of a targeted BPA signif-icantly decreased antibiotic prescriptions for acute bronchitis. (c) 2020 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
