Trichodes apiarius (Linnaeus) (Cleridae) found in Hertfordshire (VC 20)

A single adult specimen of Trichodes apiarius (Linnaeus) was found on 2 August 2019 in a flowery field in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire (TL05980671) by MP. The beetle was feeding on the umbels of wild carrot Daucus carota, and was seen to have a damaged tip to the right elytron. Although not regarding himself as a 'beetle expert', MP recognised the beetle from European visits and took a photograph with his mobile phone, which was posted with a tentative identification to the 'Beetles of Britain and Ireland' Facebook Group website, where its identity was confirmed by Michael Geiser and Max Barclay. The photograph was sent later to TJ, then the Hertfordshire County Recorder, who also confirmed it.
