Shepherding the Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine:TTU-SVM Founding Dean GuyLoneracan Sets the Tone for the Program's Launch

Depending on how you look at it, the Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine (TTU-SVM) is an endeavor five years or four decades in the making. State approval for a veterinary program for Texas Tech came back in November 1971, but fundingto build that program never materialized from the Texas Legislature. After a number of false starts, the project finally started to get off the ground in 2015, when then-Texas Tech Chancellor Bob Duncan gave senior leadership the direction to develop a School of Veterinary Medicine. Among that senior leadership group was Australian Guy Loneragan, who joined the Texas Tech faculty in 2010 as a professor of food safety and public health. In 2014, he joined the Office of the Vice President, and over the ensuing years, an area of increasing focus became how Texas Tech might participate in veterinary education.
