"... the intensive genetic selection of livestock and poultry for efficient growth and reproduction for many decades may have diminished the immune system and consequently reduced disease resistance (Klasing, 2017)The variable health and growth performance of young pigs continues to be a challenge. Many of the factors contributing to this variation are well understood as are the many remedial practices.However, the quest for improved growth performance with reduced variation whilst maintaining good health and avoiding disease, requires continual diligence and vigilance. This on-going challenge is combined with the reality and ever-growing concern about bacterial resistance to antibiotics necessitating reduced use and reliance on antibiotics.
