摘要

The devastation that the opioid-overdose crisis has wrought on individuals, families, and communities in the United States (U.S.) cannot be overstated. Opioid-involved overdose deaths have risen steadily over the past decade, reaching an annual high of 49 860 in 2019. The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic is projected to worsen this trend. As such, continued focus on, investment in and strengthening of policies to address high-risk opioid prescribing and opioid-seeking is needed. Prescription Monitoring Programs (PMP), state-run electronic databases that track prescribing and dispensing of controlled substances, are a core component of the U.S. response to the crisis.
