Hurricane Harvey's trail of destruction across Texas exposes the vulnerable heart of the US energy industry. Immediate responses by state and federal government show that important lessons were learnt from the chaos and confusion following hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. Better resources, communication and planning are helping to limit the impact of the latest natural disaster despite the record intensity of the storm. But no attempt was made to address the risks of concentrating so many key energy supply assets in the so-called hurricane alley.
