Energy industry watchdog the IEA is ringing a familiar alarm bell. Sharply higher oil prices indicate that supply - facing a growing number of political disruptions - is not keeping up with rising demand as the global economy accelerates above trend this year. The IEA warns that "the world's spare capacity cushion... might be stretched to the limit" as Saudi Arabia, its Mideast Gulf allies and Russia relax Vienna agreement output constraints in response to falling Venezuelan production and renewed US sanctions against Iran.
