POSCO’s Gwangyang Steelworks on the south coast of South Korea is one of the largest steel plants in the world. It is a24.8Mtpa integrated steel plant with its own port for raw materials and finished goods logistics and has a secure rawmaterials supply, mainly from the company’s overseas joint venture mines. The plant is equipped with large-scale facilities,including the world’s largest blast furnace (6,000m3), state-of-the-art technologies and a high automation linear productionsystem (strip casting and endless hot rolling), resulting in an efficient steel processing, saving energy and reducing CO2emissions. The plant imports iron ore and metallurgical coal - iron ore mainly from Australia, Brazil and Canada; coalmainly from Australia, Canada and Russia. The plant produces hot rolled coil and value added flat products, such as coldrolled coil, electric steel, and stainless steel. Gwangyang Works benefits from economics of scale and AME estimates thatit lies in the second quarter of cash cost curve and in the first quarter of the margin curve.
