Reference intraocular ultrasonography biometric values in Kord Horses

Reference ocular measurements determined in seven 3 to 5 year old normal Kord horses are provided. Fourteen trans palpebral ocular right and left eye echo biometric examinations were performed. Horses were tranquillized with 0.3-0.4mg/kg acepromazineand 0.05-0.1 mg/kg xylazine. Ultrasonographic images were obtained with a 8 MHz linear probe in the sagittal plane. B-scan images along the central optic axis measured anterior-posterior length of the eye axis, lens diameter, depth of anterior and vitreous chambers with sonograms on the horizontal plane. Mean anterior to posterior eye globe length was 39.1 ± 1.3mm, depth of anterior chamber 4.35 ± 1.18mm, vitreous chamber 16.95 ± 1.75mm and lens thickness 11.85 ± 1.17mm. With exception of overall size of the globe and internal structures, the ultrasonographic appearance and echotexture of the Kord horse eye was similar to that described in other equines.
