Dear Readers,In 2019,the German steel industry output was 39,7 Mt(in 2020 only 36 Mt)and ranked as the seventh largest steel producer in the world and the biggest in Europe,even if China's production was around 25 times higher.The dynamized CO2-tax(price rise up to 55 EUR/t CO2 by 2026)is creating pressure to act-away from carbon-based production towards low-or zero-carbon processes.For this reason,amongst other things,the SALCOS project has been initiated by Salzgitter AG/DE to introduce the use of hydrogen.If all integrated steelworks in Germany were switched over to the new process route,then according to Dr Markus Dorndorf from LOI Thermprocess/Tenova/DE,the CO2 reduction would correspond to 170 car-free days in Germany per year.An impressive figure,but the availability and costs of green hydrogen remains a problem.Step-by-step conversion to the environmentally compatible technology is certainly possible based on steady enrichment of natural gas with hydrogen.
