NASA Addresses Noise from Urban Air Mobility Vehicles

A technical paper from NASA's Urban Air Mobility Noise Working Group (UNWG) examines current practices and gaps related to noise from urban air mobility (UAM) vehicles, broadly characterized as electrical vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles capable of carrying passengers and/or cargo between 800 and 8,000 pounds. "The character of UAM noise is anticipated to be different than that of existing helicopters and general aviation aircraft such that UAM's noise exposure and potential annoyance could limit its integration into the National Airspace System and general acceptability," according to Joseph Czech, principal consultant at HMMH and a member of the group, which agreed on these high-level goals designed to address barriers to vehicle entry into service: document noise reduction technologies available for UAM and identify knowledge gaps for each of the four areas of interest (see below).
