Research has been a key function for AFS, and its origin lies in a contribution of $337.11 in 1916, which is approximately equal to $8,134.37 in today's dollars. This was the balance left over after all meeting expenses had been paid at the American Foundrymen's Association annual convention in Cleveland. The next contribution was received at the Columbus, Ohio, convention in 1920, when Thomas W. and John C. Pangborn gave $2,500, which the board of directors credited to the research fund. On February 23,1921, a further contribution of $1,000 was received from Herbert S. Simpson, of the National Engineering Co., making the total contributions $3,837.11.
