'Shattered, smoothly I awake' Psychodynamic perspectives on suicidality and autodestructive body practices among women

The basis of this article is for one, the 20 years of psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapeutic experience with suicidal patients at the Center for Therapy and Research of Suicidal Behavior at the University Hospital of Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) and for another, the shortage of sufficient theoretical concepts on the suicidal behavior of women. With a brief and critical recognition of the standard explanatory models, it will first be shown that suicidological research has so far hardly gone beyond the reproduction of typical gender role stereotypes. The hypothesis developed here is that a differentiated approach to female suicidality and autodestructive body practices can only be achieved by taking into account the constitution of female identity, subjectivity, and the gender-specific appropriation of corporeality.
