The usage of coercive measures in psychiatric units and its potential counter-therapeutic impact on outcome

Coercive interventions including physical and chemical restraints are universally used to prevent psychiatric patients to harm themselves or others. However, the use of coercive measures is currently a highly debated and controversial topic in mental health practice. A number of programmes have been implemented that aim to reduce the use of restrictive measures since such restraints can lead to serious physical harm and unfavourable psychological effects on patients. Duxbury and colleagues conducted this study to evaluate the impact of the six core strategies on restraint usage in mental health trusts in the UK.
