Inpatient falls are serious adverse events that can increase patient morbidity as well as hospital costs. Almost every year, 3.4 million people over 65 years fall in the UK. One of the most common type of inpatient accident are falls, reporting for up to 70% of inpatient accidents. Moreover, the rate of hospital falls that lead to injury has been estimated up to 33%. Healthcare expenditures as direct and indirect payment of injurious falls in the UK are calculated at over ￡2 billion per year, mostly related to hip fracture. Therefore, reducing falls is a key organisational priority that leads to better patient safety.A recent suggestion in tackling falls reduction is the use of PNSs.
