Kestrel is an efficient and low mining cost underground operation that produces standard hard coking coal and a small amount of thermal coal for the export market. The mine is 367km from the Port of Gladstone and, therefore, has higher transportation costs compared to other mines in the basin. Kestrel can also rail coal to Dalrymple Bay, which is an advantage if there are problems on the Gladstone rail line or at the port. Kestrel's south extension had a high capital cost of US$2bn, but will extend the mine life by 20 years.
