ERDENES TAVAN TOLGOI-- FEATURE ARTICLE – JULY 2020

Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi currently is the largest open-cut coal mine in Mongolia, producing around 10Mtpa of metallurgical and thermal coal, predominately for Chinese markets. The geology is favourable, with multiple coal seams totalling over 85m thickness at a low strip ratio, averaging 2.74:1 over 30 years. Export coal is trucked 257km to the Chinese border, but a rail line is planned in the medium term. The coal is not washed, but a wash plant may be installed in the next few years to improve thermal product quality. Despite the mine having a lower FOB cost of ~US$60/t, the mine had difficulty paying contractors in 2014–2016 due to financial and management decisions of the previous Mongolian Government. Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi is currently profitable but the revenue is affected heavily by demand from Chinese customers.
