Comparative Study of Efficacy of Intravenous Iron Sucrose verses Oral Iron therapy in Anemia of Pregnancy in Obs. & Gyne. Department in PMCH, Patna

Iron deficiency anemia is the most common indirect cause of maternal mortality in our country.According to WHO, 35% to 75% of pregnant women in developing countries are anemic.The first choice of treatment of iron deficiency anemia is oral iron replacement because it is safe, effective and cheap. If oraf iron therapy fails or if iron loss is more than oral intake, then intravenous iron therapy is given.Previously iron dextran & iron gluconate were used for intravenous therapy but they caused anaphylactic reactions. A test dosing was needed before administration. Iron sucrose is safe, can be given without a test dose and is effective.
