The government introduced many schemes from time to time like the Pilot Crop Insurance Scheme (PCIS) based on homogenous area approach with the cover of 6.27 lakh farmers, the Comprehensive Crop Insurance Scheme (1985) as an extension of PCIS that lasted till 1999, the National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (1999 rabi), the Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme (WBCIS, 2007), the Modified National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (2011) and the Coconut Crop Insurance Scheme. In order to overcome the lesscoverage of previous schemes the government has designed a new scheme Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Ibjana (PMFBT) in 2016 with an aim of covering 50 % of cropped area within 3 years.
