In this issue, Acharya et al. demonstrate that glucocorticoids produced by macrophages and monocytes in the tumor microenvironment induce a dysfunctional CD8(+) T cell phenotype. Blocking myeloid glucocortico-genesis enhances tumor immune surveillance and responsiveness to immune checkpoint therapy.
