Beef shows and sales have been a rite of spring in the Maritimes for decades.Whether in a drafty, weather-beaten barn or a shiny new arena, they're a refuge where generations of farm families congregate with friends, neighbours, ag reps, and suppliers to exchange news and stories, complain, and discuss anything and everything under the sun. And where breeders of all ages, who' ve spent the fall and winter caring for their animals, finally get to display their knowledge and skills to their peers.Organizers, who are fully aware of the stress and uncertainty caused by the pandemic, have been kept awake at nights while wracking their brains for ways to safely preserve the tradition. Directors have brainstormed ideas about how to protect the exhibitors and the buyers - who, despite the effects of COVID-19 on their businesses, continue to support the sales - while competitors face off in a show ring.
