ARE INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES BECOMING PASSE? Volvo became the first mainstream car manufacturer to eschew the internal combustion engine when it announced that after 2019, all new models would have an electric or hybrid engine. The day after Volvo made its announcement, France said it intends to end sales of gasoline and diesel cars entirely by 2040. France is part of a multigovernment program called the Electric Vehicle Initiative, which has set a goal for 30 percent market share for battery-powered cars, buses, trucks and vans by 2030. Currently, electric vehicles represent just 0.2 percent of total light-duty vehicles.
