In recent years, hydrofluorocarbons – or HFCs – have been in the crosshairs of environmental organisations, the EPA, state governments and even industry groups across the US. Commonly used in refrigeration, air conditioning, building insulation, foams and aerosols, HFCs first came into widespread commercial use as EPA-approved replacements for substances that deplete the ozone layer, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs).
