A mixtures assessment factor (MAF) of 20 would protect the freshwater aquatic environment from 95% of unintentional chemical combinations, according to analysis conducted by a leading figure in mixtures toxicity research for a Swedish authority. The EU is currently discussing introducing a MAF to REACH to account for the potential for chemicals to present greater risks when present as unintentional combinations, compared with as single entities in isolation.
