Revolutions are never painless - not even the ongoing ''green revolution,'' in which bio-based plastics, are playing a big part. Consumers, and therefore the big-box stores and myriad other retailers that serve them, love bioplastics - which are made from renewable biological sources, not petrochemicals - for their smaller energy and environmental footprints. For many plastics molders, however, it's more like a love/hate relationship since, from a processing point of view, biopolymers come with a unique set of concerns not found in more common petroleum-based polymers, including moisture, process variation, and sensitivity to temperature and residence time.
