摘要

Patients should be given the opportunity to consider a variety of emollients from the wide spectrum of products available and identify the most suitable products for their skin (Moncrieff et al, 2013). Emollients come in a variety of formulations—oils, lotions, creams, ointments and sprays, with additional properties such as humectant, anti-itch or antiseptic agents. It is important that nurses are aware of the different preparations so that they can help patients to make an informed choice (Lawton, 2013). Emollient routines need to be realistic and achievable for the patient and they should be prescribed adequate quantities for optimal effect (250-600 g per week) (Moncrieff et al, 2013).
