ALLUAUD'S LITTLE YELLOW ANT, PLAGIOLEPIS ALLUAUDI (HYMENOPTERA: FORMICIDAE) IN SCOTLAND

Substantial numbers of Plagiolepis alluaudi Emery, Alluaud's Little Yellow Ant, can be found in the hot houses of Threave Gardens in southwest Scotland. Some background information about these colonies and attempts to control them are given. It is possible the lack of data of this species in the UK for a substantial part of the twentieth century may be due to a lack of recording, combined with localised extinctions and occasional re-introductions. Some additional notes are given on historical and modern British records and alate queens are illustrated.
