Royal Caribbean to install scrubbers on 19 ships

Houston-Royal Caribbean will retrofit nearly half of its more than 40 ships with advanced emissions purification systems, often called scrubbers, to comply with stricter limits on marine fuel sulfur content that come into effect in January, the Miami-based cruise operator said. Next year, ships traveling within 200 miles of shore in North America and the Baltic and North seas must use fuel with a maximum sulfur content of 0.1%, down from 1%, according to International Maritime Organization regulations.
