Baghdad—Iraq’s cabinet has nominatedThamir Ghadban as OPEC’s next secretary gen-eral when Abdalla el-Badri’s second two-yearterm in the job finishes at the end of this yearAn announcement emailed to journalistssaid the cabinet had “approved the nomina-tion of Mr. Thamer Ghadhban as SecretaryGeneral to the Organization of PetroleumExporting Countries (OPEC).”An oil industry veteran who has servedtwice as oil minister, Ghadban is currently topadviser to the prime minister. He has heldnumerous high-level positions since 2003,including that of oil minister in the first Iraqiadministration after the regime of SaddamHussein was ousted. He was appointed oilminister again in 2005.
