Bahrainis Sentenced to Death

A military court in Bahrain on Thursday sentenced four people to death for killing two policemen during pro-democracy demonstrations. Three more people were sentenced to life in prison. The government is also investigating 23 doctors and 23 nurses who could be charged with "atrocious crimes" next week, according to the head of Bahrain's Information Affairs Authority, Sheikh Fawaz al-Khalifa. Demonstrators in the Shiite-majority country have been demanding reforms from their Sunni rulers, who have blamed Shiite-led Iran for meddling (IOD Apr.27,p6).
