US court blocks West Elk coal mine permit

A federal judge has blocked US coal producer Arch Coal’s proposed expansion of its West Elk mine in Colorado. Judge R. Brooke Jackson of the US District Court for the District of Colorado on 8 November ordered the US Interior Department to reconsider its approval of the project, faulting regulators for failing to consider requiring Arch to flare rather than vent methane released during mining operations.
