Twelve new M&A transactions were announced during the week ended 18 December, up from seven during the week prior. The year is seeing a big burst of activity as it draws to a close. Most transactions announced last week were small, however. The week's most notable deal was W.R. Grace's acquisition of Albermarle's polyolefin catalysts business for $416 million. The transaction is a part of a push by Grace to expand the company's presence in catalysts. The deal "streamlines Albermarle's portfolio," says Laurence Alexander, an analyst with Jefferies (New York). Albemarle has been pouring capital into its fast-growing lithium business, and while the company views the catalysts segment as a strong cash generator it has not focused investment on catalysts, as Grace has in recent years.
