Animals farmed for food

John Callaghan, WSPA's Farm Animal Welfare Director, explains why there is no justification for the grim reality faced by many animals bred for food around the world. It may be argued that animals bred for food make the greatest sacrifice of all for humans. You might therefore expect that they would be dealt with in a respectful and humane fashion. However, the plight of food animals is one of the biggest animal welfare problems in the world today, based on the scale and extent of the suffering involved. Such cruelty is not evident when meat is being bought, but may go on behind the scenes - often thousands of miles away.
