Energy and environment: Indonesia towards clean energy utilization

Energy has played a dominant role in Indonesia's economy, it has contributed significant income and generated the I country's economy as well. During the past three decades, energy development has grown rapidly in line with the economic growth. However, the financial crisis in 1997 has put Indonesian economy into crucial problems which affected many other sectors including energy. As an energy exporting country, Indonesia has to work out on its three-lemma (energy-environmental-economic) problems. The current energy-environmental problems include inefficiencies in using energy, emissions in urban transportation and industry, poor energy pricing system, and weak energy-environmental related policies and implementation. To response to the increasing problems on energy development, Indonesia needs to develop its renewables, to enhance energy efficiency and conservation, and to diversify its energy sources. Moreover, the Government should reevaluate the current energy pricing system, restructure the energy industry, and improve coordination among government concern with energy-environmental issues.
