Peculiarities of argon-arc and diffusion welding of titanium to aluminium

Conditions are studied for making sound welded joint of titanium with aluminium and its alloys. Technology is developed for argon-arc welding of titanium alloy sheets with aluminium and AMg3 and AMg6 alloys of 1 to 6 ms thickness. It is found,that the best properties of welded joints can be achieved only with aluminizing of titanium sheet edges. The aluminizing conditions are determined. Here, the temperature of aluminium molten pool should not be higher than 780 °C. The ultimate strength ofVT-1 + AD1 and VT-1 AMg6 joints is 82...93 and 238...318 MPa, respectively. The technology of pressure welding of 20 mm dia. bars of VTl-0 titanium with AD1 aluminium and AMg3 aluminium-magnesium alloy is developed. In welding of VT1-0 with AD1 theultimate strength of the joint is equal to 80...90 MPa, and with AMg3 aluminium-magnesium alloy - 216...233 MPa. In welding under the optimal conditions the mechanical properties of welded joints on the level of the parent metal (aluminium and its alloys) are provided.
