Remediation technologies for contaminated soil due to hazardous chemicals

During the last two decades in Japan, volatile organochlorines like trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene were detected nation-widely in groundwater taken from industrial and urban areas. Such anthropogenic chemicals tend to stay in subsurface environment for many years, then various sorts of technologies, including both of being originally developed in Japan and transferred from over sea as well, were applied to contaminated sites to remove and degrade hazardous contaminants. To facilitate advances in remediation, it is necessary from the cost-beneficial point of view to develop suitable survey methods and efficient pollutant removal technologies. The paper describes the present state of subsurface pollution and the remediation technologies applied so far in Japan.
