Protonic acid sites are reversibly formed from molecular hydrogen through dissociation of hydrogen molecules to hydrogen atoms, spillover of the hydrogen atoms, surface diffusion of the spillover hydrogen atoms, and conversion of the hydrogen atoms into protons at Lewis acid Sites. The protons thus formed act as catalytically active sites for acid-catalyzed reactions. The importance and implication of the concept "Molecular hydrogen-originated protonic acid site" are discussed.
