Analysing the activities of food industry enterprises within the Russian agroindustrial complex

Trends in different sectors of the Russian food industry are examined for 1997-98 and the first quarter of 1999, with comparisons of statistics regarding turnover, profitability and indebtedness of large and medium-sized enterprises. Numbers of loss-making enterprises increased threefold during 1998. Recommendations are made for ways of improving the financial position of enterprises, namely: reducing taxes on profits; improving access to credit; and encouraging rapid payment of outstanding debts by strengthening the position of creditors.
