Agronomic inputs for producing maize for silage were investigated at Bryansk in 1995-97 on a grey forest soil. Results confirmed the interactive effects of organic and mineral fertilizers with chemicals for controlling pests and pathogens on plant growth, total dry matter, leafiness, photosynthetic potential and photosynthetic yield, particularly at crop densities of 70 000 to 100 000 plants/ha. The highest yield of green matter (mean of 77.7 t/ha over the 3 years) was obtained with application offarmyard manure at 55 t/ha, siderate at 8-11 t/ha and straw at 5-6 t/ha, with low application rates of mineral fertilizers and pesticides.
