Features of the growth and development of new brewing varieties of barley in relation to sowing rate, sowing date and sowing depth

The new brewing varieties Bowman from the USA and Efron from the Netherlands were compared with the new locally grown variety Gonar in 1996-98 on grey forest soil in Chuvashiya. The foreign varieties were characterized by high grain yields (300-400g/m2), while Gonar was characterized by slightly lower yields but stable grain quality. Under conditions of water deficit in early spring, optimum sowing rates were 6 to 6.5 million grains per ha combined with mid-late sowing (the second half of May) ata depth of 6-7 cm. Under optimum spring conditions, sowing rates of 3 to 6 million grains per ha, early sowing (first half of May) and sowing depths of 4-7 cm (for Gonar and Bowman) and 4-5 cm (for Efron) were recommended.
