A new genus of digger wasps of the tribe Oxybelini (Hymenoptera, Crabronidae) from Cape Province of South Africa

The digger wasp Gessus capensis gen. et sp. n. (Hymenoptera, Sphecidae. Crabroninae, Oxybelini) is described from the Cape Province of South Africa. The new representative of the tribe is a member of the group of genera with developed postscutellar squamae and unmodified abdominal tergites. Gessus gen. n. resembles Brimocelus Arnold 1927 in having the notched mandibles, developed psammophore, and ecarinate pronotum but differs from it by the convex pronotai collar, distinct stemaulus, simple postscutellar squamae, and by the absence of the propodeal mucro. Gessus gen. n. resembles Enchemicrum Pate 1929 in the form of postscutellar squamae and differs from it by the developed psammophore in female, convex and ecarinate pronotai collar, absence of the omaulus, and developed propodeal mucro.
